History of the Program

The Archaeology/Anthropology program at Washington and Lee began in 1972 with the arrival of Dr. John McDaniel. Until 1989, students wanting to major in archaeology had to declare an independent major, but that year, the archaeology/anthropology major was approved. Now, students have the option of choosing either a Sociology/Anthropology major or an Archaeology/Anthropology major.
