COPPER BOTTOM SURVEY

An Independent Survey

Jessie Mann

During the spring of 2002, a preliminary survey was undertaken in order to explore the history and prehistory of the Copper Bottom farmstead.  During the excavation 10 shovel tests were placed across the site to explore occupation of the area.  A multi-component standing structure exists on the property.  The earliest portion is log, and dates back to (at the earliest) the 1820’s.  The later portion was built between the 1860’s and 70’s.  During the excavation artifacts consistent with the historic occupation of the house were located at a depth of approximately 1.5 feet.  A prehistoric occupation was located between the house and the spring, in a narrow lens at a depth of 2.5 feet.  While minimal number of artifacts were located in this level the presence of fire cracked rock, charcoal, an anvil stone and a few flakes may represent a single-component site.  This site has the potential to be significant under criterion D, yielding information important to history or prehistory.
